I’m very sorry for your loss. I lost a 15 year old dog about a year ago and can still hear the jangle of his collar occasionally when I come downstairs in the morning. The sadness has changed to sweet reminiscence, but it’s been a long road. This comment though made me laugh out loud for a few minutes. “…freaked out the way you would if a tiny alien reached out of your toilet and pinched you on the ass…” and I thank you for that.
I lost my last dog to a ruptured abdominal tumor too, at the same age. It just sucks.
A therapist told me I should stop saying "sorry for your loss" because it's a "filler phrase" for grief. So now instead of saying it, I just tell people I was told to stop saying it. (I think this might actually be worse..)
I avoid sad dog movies as a rule, but the final scene of the sad dog movie Togo (with the inimitable Willem Dafoe) was perfect, and is my go-to whenever I think about the dogs I've lost. Although, probably best to wait, you know, a few hundred years before watching a sad dog movie.
Damn bro. You've endured this whole thing with grace and aplomb. You and your family are good people. You know how it works. You send good shit out into the world and good shit comes back to you. I wish you all the best.
I’ve been reading “hom-Frey” instead of “home-fry. I like the first because it give a distinguished old England feel. I had to speed read through the Prim parts. It brought back some of my own sad memories. Good writing! “Escape From Asheville” - is there going to be a movie? Suzy and I have been living in our camper while we wait for power to be restored. The lady at the Co-op said 3-4 weeks when I talked to her yesterday. I think it will be today. We will no be here. We are going to Thomasville for our youngest daughter’s birthday (43 - damn!). It feels strange to yearn for just a regular day.
Beautiful piece SGR
